VAT Calculator

Add VAT to a net price, or reverse VAT to recover the price before tax from a gross total. The page exposes both directions: the top row adds VAT, the bottom row removes it. Works for any rate; the calculator is rate-agnostic, so enter whichever percentage applies to your invoice.

How VAT is calculated

Add VAT (net → gross): in the top row, enter the net price and the VAT rate. The formula is gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100).

Remove VAT (gross → net): in the bottom row, enter the gross price and the VAT rate. The calculator works backward from the gross to recover the original net. The formula is net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). The VAT amount is gross − net.

Worked example

A 100 net invoice at a 20% VAT rate. The top row gives 120, the gross. Going the other way: a 120 gross total at 20%, entered in the bottom row, gives 100 back, the net.

VAT Calculator FAQ

What VAT rate should I use?
It depends on the jurisdiction and the product. Most jurisdictions publish a standard rate plus reduced rates for specific categories (essentials like food, books, or children's clothing typically attract a lower rate). Check the rate published by the relevant tax authority for your transaction.
How do I add 20% VAT to a price of 100?
Use the top row: net 100, VAT rate 20. Result: 120. The VAT amount is 20.
How do I find the price before VAT from a gross total?
Use the bottom row. With a 20% rate, a 120 gross becomes 100 net (120 ÷ 1.20). Enter 120 as the gross price and 20 as the VAT rate.
What's the difference between VAT and sales tax?
VAT is collected at every stage of production and is typically embedded in the displayed price. Sales tax is collected only at the final sale and is usually shown separately at checkout. The arithmetic on this page is the same for either.
Is this VAT calculator free?
Yes. Free, no signup, runs in your browser. Works for any rate or currency.
